This is the first Angelica wine style produced by Mike Brown at Kalyra. With a rich tradition in creating award-winning dessert wines - some of the best dessert wines from the best Santa Ynez wineries - this latest addition is certain to continue to enhance that reputation. This style of wine dates back to the early 16th century in France and Spain. For this Spanish dessert wine, the Syrah grapes (Whitehawk Vinyards, Los Alamos) were picked and then cold-soaked for a period of four days. At that time the juice is drawn off, having a dark, richly concentrated characteristic. Although fortified with a neutral brandy spirit, the process of making this wine is slightly different from that of Port and Muscat; the resultant alcohol levels are much less, making it a low alcohol red wine. The wine is bright in berries and a floral nose. It is sweet on the pallet with a crisp, lingering finish. We believe that this sweet red wine is a dessert unto itself and does not need to be paired with rich foods…but, if you are so inclined, we recommend trying it with fresh ice cream and a piece of dark chocolate.
