Californian Zinfandel has always offered unique characteristics that distinguish it from its long lost Croatian cousins. Having always been a fan of this varietal, winemaker Mike Brown ventured north to find suitable fruit for this wine. The fruit was sourced from the Dry Creek Vineyards in the Russian River area of the Sonoma Valley. The vines were from old stock that have been producing fruit for over 50 years. The wine was aged in American Oak for over 20 months and then bottles in August 2006. The result is a wine that is slightly more subtle than some of the big, high alcohol Californian Zinfandels. The tannins, while present, do not take over your palette. The fruit is a classic dark berry and offers a delightful jammy finish. This wine is perfect with hearty steaks and grilled meats. Let the wine breath for a while after opening as it is still a youngster when it comes to full bodied Zinfandels. Only 320 cases produced. .
